Short answer
Static billboards are the most affordable option for long-term branding. Digital LED billboards offer scheduling flexibility and high impact at greater cost. Interactive and programmatic DOOH options add engagement and targeting for campaigns that need measurable, scalable reach.
What advertisers actually paid on AdQuick
| Market | Typical CPM range | Median 4-week rate per unit | Typical 4-week range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 10 markets (DMA 1-10) | $1.50 to $3.75 | $3,300 | $1,800 to $6,100 |
| Large markets (DMA 11-50) | $1.50 to $2.75 | $2,200 | $1,350 to $3,500 |
| Mid-size markets (DMA 51-100) | $1.50 to $3.75 | $1,400 | $750 to $2,300 |
| Smaller markets (DMA 101+) | $1.75 to $5.00 | $1,200 | $800 to $1,950 |
For context, digital bulletins transact at roughly 5-12x the CPM of comparable static bulletins on the marketplace, depending on period and buying mix.
Static-format figures reflect all transactions on the AdQuick marketplace, including large multi-market volume buys.

The four main billboard display types
Billboard advertising spans four broad categories, each with distinct trade-offs.
Static billboards use printed vinyl or painted fixed creative. They carry the lowest technology complexity and the lowest ongoing costs, making them well suited to long-term brand presence. The trade-off is zero content flexibility once the board is printed.
Digital LED billboards display multiple ads, video, and animations on large outdoor LED screens with scheduled rotations. They deliver high visual impact and the ability to change creative, daypart messages, or run multiple advertisers in rotation. Upfront hardware costs and ongoing electricity and maintenance expenses are significantly higher than static.
Interactive digital billboards build on LED screens by adding QR codes, augmented reality, motion sensors, or touchscreens. They are best suited to experiential marketing and events where audience engagement and data collection justify the additional hardware and creative development costs.
Programmatic digital out of home (DOOH) lets advertisers buy digital billboard time slots or impressions algorithmically through buying platforms, without owning any hardware. Operators including JCDecaux, Lamar, OUTFRONT, and Clear Channel Outdoor make inventory available through programmatic platforms such as Vistar and Place Exchange. This model is particularly effective for scalable multi-city or regional campaigns with flexible, data-driven optimization.
Cost and location as the key variables
Costs vary widely across all four types, and location is the single largest pricing driver.
Static billboards run from roughly $250 to $2,000 or more per month depending on location, size, and traffic. Costs beyond the monthly rate include printing and initial installation.
Digital LED billboards carry higher upfront hardware costs: large highway units can run into tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the physical screen and its steel support structure. Monthly advertising rates typically fall between $1,200 and $15,000 or more, again depending on size and traffic volume. Ongoing operational costs include electricity, routine maintenance, and content management software.
Interactive billboards add hardware and creative development expenses on top of standard digital costs.
Programmatic DOOH is priced by impressions or time slots, allowing budgets to scale from local to national without a long-term contract or capital investment in hardware.
High-traffic urban and highway locations command premium rates across all types. Suburban and rural sites offer more moderate pricing and can deliver targeted reach for regional advertisers.
Durability, size, and installation
Durability: Well-maintained outdoor LED billboards are designed to last ten years or more. Key durability factors are sealed weatherproof cabinets with appropriate IP ratings (protection against rain, dust, heat, and cold) and cooling designs that reduce component failure. Static billboards are less technically complex but susceptible to weather damage and fading, requiring periodic replacement or maintenance.
Size and resolution: Highway and roadside formats use large boards, such as 14 by 48 feet, with a wider pixel pitch suited to fast-moving traffic at distance. Urban pedestrian-level digital boards use medium sizes with tighter pixel pitch for sharper images at closer range. Indoor digital signage uses smaller screens with fine resolution. Choosing the right pixel pitch is a cost-quality trade-off: wider pitch reduces cost but lowers sharpness at close range.
Installation: Static billboards require simple mounting structures and minimal electrical work. Digital LED installations need engineered steel frameworks capable of bearing heavy screens and wind loads, adequate electrical infrastructure, and data connectivity for remote content updates. All billboard types must comply with local zoning, safety codes, brightness limits, and operating-hour regulations, and FCC requirements apply to digital units.
Content management and software
Digital and interactive billboards depend on digital signage software for scheduling, playback control, and remote management. Platforms such as Rise Vision, ScreenCloud, and Scala Digital Signage offer cloud-based dashboards with playlist management, approval workflows, multi-location control, and user permissions. Other solutions including Yodeck, Cirrus, DisplayNOW, and EasySignage add interactivity, live data feeds, and analytics.
When evaluating a digital billboard manufacturer or provider, the source material points to: track record, brightness and image quality consistency, energy efficiency, weatherproofing and IP ratings, warranty and parts availability, FCC and local compliance certifications, and the service network for installation and ongoing support. Daktronics and Formetco are cited as established US manufacturers recognized for dependable performance.
